Day 128: “Through Being Cool” by Saves The Day

Memories. There are a lot of them with this album!

I saw Saves the Day in concert for the first time just 2 years ago. They played with Say Anything. It was a 15 year anniversary tour where they played this entire album.

It was fun to listen to them, but unfortunately their stage presence is nothing in comparison to Say Anything.

It makes me wonder, with all of these reunion tours happening…are they having fun? Reunion tours among the emo & pop punk scene have been popping up left and right.

Do artists enjoy revisiting their past? I imagine it can be quite difficult for a band to come out with an album that everyone loves, but then only be remembered for that album. The greatest artists (in my opinion), are always trying something new and perfecting their sound.

But…there is always that “cool” guy that says, ” Hey man…that band sucks now…they’ve sold out…their only good album was that one they made a long time ago…”

Well here’s what I have to say to that….

I’m through being cool.

I do love this old album, but their others are equally fun to listen to!

And it’s lyrics like this…that I just can’t say no to:

Track 4- “Rocks Tonic Juice Magic”

Let me take this awkward saw
And run it against your thighs
Cut some flesh away
I’ll carry this piece of you with me
Because all I can say tonight
is that I hate you
But it would be all right
If we could see each other sometime
If I could somehow make you mine
And if not I’ll take my rusty spoons
And dig out your blue eyes
I’ll swallow them down to my colon
They’re gonna burn like hell tonight
Because you’re beautiful
Just not on the inside
Light comes from within
And your beaming eyes don’t seem so bright
My heart is on the floor
Why don’t you step on it?
When I think of all the things you’ve done
Boardwalks and breaking waves
Made our Saturdays
I’d buy you lemonade right now
if you were here
But then I’d throw it in your face
And I’d listen to you cry
And I’d remember how I miss
our nights under ocean skies
You and I are like when fire
and the ocean floor collide.

Day 127. “Your Favorite Weapon” by Brand New

That sassy lady in the photo is one of my best friends, Megan. Phil is cool too. 🙂

There’s something about a warm summer night in Lancaster County that makes the teenagers go crazy. This happened to be one of those nights.

It was June 10th, 2005…and my best decided…what better way to celebrate a birthday than opening up her family’s go-karting establishment for an evening of rumspringah-debauchery.

We called our various contacts in hopes of scoring some jugs of Carlo Rosse Blush wine (yep).blush

The fire-flies we barely out, and the air was fresh. We popped in some tunes, and drove to meet our friends at the go-karts.

That night…I met friends that I didn’t even know I had. I had jack daniels for the first time. I also drove a go-kart while drinking a bottle of jack daniels (Megan’s parents…I really hope you aren’t reading this).

I drank that entire bottle that evening (it was a small bottle..let’s not kid ourselves), and I had one of the best nights of my life.

Some of you remember that night very well, and I’ll leave it up to you to carry on the memory, because I’m not sharing anymore on here! The rest is a secret ❤

I’m gonna stay 18 forever..

Track 12-Soco Amaretto Lime”

Passed out on the overpass
Sunday best and broken glass
Broken down from the bikes and bars
Suspended like spirits over speeding cars

You and me we’re kings over the parkway tonight
And tonight will go on forever while we
Walk around this town like we own the streets
And stay awake through summer like we own the heat

Singing ‘Everybody wake up it’s time to get down’
(Wake up everybody, everybody wake up it’s time to get down)
And when I pass the bottle back to Pete
On the overpass tonight, I bet we laugh

I’m gonna stay eighteen forever
(Cut me open)
So we can stay like this forever
(Sun poisoned)
And we’ll never miss a party
(This offer)
‘Cause we keep them going constantly
(Stands forever)

And we’ll never have to listen
(New haircut)
To anyone about anything
(New bracelet)
‘Cause it’s all been done and it’s all been said
We’re the coolest kids and we take what we can get

The hell out of this town find some conversation
The low fuel lights been on for days, it doesn’t mean anything
I’ve got another 500, ‘nother 500 miles
Before we shut this engine down, we shut it down

I’m gonna stay eighteen forever
(Cut me open)
So we can stay like this forever
(Sun poisoned)
And we’ll never miss a party
(This offer)
‘Cause we keep them going constantly
(Stands forever)

And we’ll never have to listen
(New haircut)
To anyone about anything
(New bracelet)
‘Cause it’s all been done and it’s all been said
We’re the coolest kids and we take what we can get
(Wait forever)

Eighteen forever
(First kisses)
(Your stomach’s filled up but you’re starved for conversation)
So we can stay like this forever
(New stitches)
(You’re spending all your nights growing old in your bed)
And we’ll never miss a party
(Collar weekend)
(And your tearin’ up your photos ’cause you wanna forget it’s over)
‘Cause we keep them going constantly
(Appearance ticket)

And we’ll never have to listen
(November to)
(Your stomach’s filled up but you’re starved for conversation)
To anyone about anything ’cause it’s all been done
(You’re spending all your nights growing old in your bed)
And it’s all been said
(Night swimmers)
(And your tearin’ up your photos ’cause you wanna forget it’s over)
We’re the coolest kids and we take what we can get

Just jealous ’cause we’re young and in love
You’re just jealous ’cause we’re young and in love
You’re just jealous ’cause we’re young and in love
You’re just jealous ’cause we’re young and in love
You’re just jealous ’cause we’re young and in love
You’re just jealous

Tomorrow: “Through Being Cool” by Saves The Day  Might as well keep this emo train a-movin’!

Day 126. “Deja Entendu” by Brand New

My 18th Birthday Party…G0-Karting! Featuring Greg, Megan & Brendan.

“Deja Entendu” by Brand New

I can always associate Brand New with my late teenage years. Maybe it was my strong emotional persona, wearing my heart on my sleeve but still holding close to my values. Brand New just got under my skin! It was the band that allowed the girls to see relationships from a guys viewpoint…but raw, and real?

There was a point where I threw my Deja Entendu to the side because I was so frustrated by their lyrics. Some of their songs reveal the act of prey on vulnerabilities (Track 8-Me vs. Maradona vs. Elvis). The upsetting part about this song is that he’s already guilty about his actions, but continues to do them regardless.

“Me Vs. Maradona Vs. Elvis”

With one or two I get used to the room
We go slow when we first make our moves
By five or six bring you out to the car
Number nine with my head on the barAnd it’s sad, but true
Out of cash and I.O.U’s

I’ve got desperate desires and unadmirable plans
My tongue will taste of gin and malicious intent
Bring you back to the bar
Get you out of the cold
A sober, straight face gets you out of your clothes
And they’re scared that we know
All the crimes they’ll commit
Who they’ll kiss before they get home

I will lie awake
Lie for fun and fake the way I hold you
Let you fall for every empty word I say

Brand New pretty much made me terrified to date…anyone…and when I did take that first step out of my comfort zone, I experienced this song. A little brutal in the dating scene…so shout out to all the ladies that have seen the same. I’m sure we’ve all been burned a few times.

On a more positive note, this brings back memories to the summers after high school spent with my closest friends. One night in particular-my 18th birthday party. We’ll leave tomorrow’s album for that story 🙂

Tomorrow: “Your Favorite Weapon” by Brand New  I’m gonna stay 18 foreverrrrr!

Day 125. “Fleetwood Mac” by Fleetwood Mac

My wonderful hippy dippy parents 🙂

I’ve listened to Fleetwood Mac plenty of times…but I’ve listen to all of the same stuff that you’ve all probably listened to…the “classic” big hits with Stevie Nicks.

So…this isn’t the self-titled album you are thinking of from 1975 (the white album)..this is the original self-titled from 1968! The debut album from Fleetwood Mac when there was no such thing as Stevie Nicks.

To be honest, I didn’t even really know about this…until this morning when I was thinking…I should really check out the first album by Fleetwood Mac, since my Dad was so adamant about all of his friends listening to their entire opus.

Blues, blues and more blues. I like it 🙂 A pleasant way to start the weekend!

Day 124. “The Original Soundtrack” by 10CC

I found this guy at a thrift store…and imagine him dancing to this album.

It’s all about this one song..

Track 7- “Life is a Minestrone”

I’m dancing on the White House lawn
Sipping tea by the Taj Mahal at dawn
Hanging round the gardens of Babylon
Minnie Mouse has got it all sewn up
She gets more fan mail than the Pope
She takes the mickey out of all my phobias
Like signing cheques to ward off double pneumonia

Life is a minestrone
Served up with parmesan cheese
Death is a cold Lasagne
Suspended in deep freeze

I’m leaning on the Tower of Pisa
Had an eyeful of the tower in France
I’m hanging round the gardens of Madison

And the seat of learning
And the flush of success
Relieves a constipated mind
I’m like a gourmet in a skid row diner
A fitting menu for a dilettante

Life is a minestrone
Served up with parmesan cheese
Death is a cold Lasagne
Suspended in deep freeze
Love is a fire of flaming brandy
Upon a crepe suzette
Let’s get this romance cooking, honey
But let us not forget

Life is a minestrone
Served up with parmesan cheese
Death is a cold Lasagne
Suspended in deep freeze

Eric Stewart (from a BBC Radio Wales interview): “We’d finished in the studio, Strawberry Studios, we’d finished recording and Lol was staying with me at the time, Lol Creme, and we were driving home and listening to BBC radio and this guy says ‘mmmrrhhr mmhmrmr strone’ and Lol says, ‘Did that guy say life is a minestrone?’ I said I don’t know but what a great song, what a great idea for a song, what a great title. Life is a minestrone, isn’t it. It’s a mixture of everything we pile in there and of course once we sat down to start writing ‘Life Is A Minestrone,’ well, what’s death? Death’s got to be a cold lasagna, you know, 3 days old, stuck in the fridge, you don’t want to eat it, and once you get on, on a roll like that about food and, and feeling, we had it written in a day.” (thanks, Edward Pearce – Ashford, Kent, England)

Tomorrow: “Fleetwood Mac” by Fleetwood Mac Don’t ever dog your woman. You know you’re gonna ruin yourself. Know that a woman she’ll run off with somebody else!

Day 123. “Green River” by Creedence Clearwater Revival

Track 1- “Green River”

Well, take me back down where cool water flows, yeah.
Let me remember things I love,
Stoppin’ at the log where catfish bite,
Walkin’ along the river road at night,
Barefoot girls dancin’ in the moonlight.

I can hear the bullfrog callin’ me.
Wonder if my rope’s still hangin’ to the tree.
Love to kick my feet ‘way down the shallow water.
Shoefly, dragonfly, get back t’your mother.
Pick up a flat rock, skip it across Green River.

Up at Cody’s camp I spent my days, oh,
With flat car riders and cross-tie walkers.
Old Cody, Junior took me over,
Said, “You’re gonna find the world is smould’rin’.
And if you get lost come on home to Green River.”

Come on home.

Years ago, I was sitting on the front porch of my parents home back in Pennsylvania. I was on a visit from San Diego, and it the creative mood. It was one of those wonderful, rainy summer days. My favorite…when the sun still shines, but the rain falls lightly…god’s watering can perhaps? I had my headphones in, and was listening to CCR. It was this very album. I had a playlist on my i-pod called “Sountrack to my Life”, and I started brainstorming on how I could turn it into a written story or memoir. Here I am, finally writing things down…years later. I hope to still write a book someday, and use the material from this blog as a starting point.

Tomorrow: “The Original Soundtrack” by 10CC  Life is a Minestrone…served up with parmesan cheese!

Day 122. “Lola Versus Powerman And The Moneygoround, Part One” by The Kinks

The creepy pig painting…that I painted over 🙂

I really don’t understand how anyone could not enjoy classic rock. There is something particularly wonderful about this album. It’s weird, and I like it.

The general theme of the album is poking fun at the music industry. However, then you have a song about the transvestite, (Track 5-)”Lola” which topped the charts! Progressive.

Favorite Tracks (besides, LOLA)-

Track 11- “Apeman”

I look out my window, but I can’t see the sky
‘Cos the air pollution is fogging up my eyes
I want to get out of this city alive

Track 13- “Gotta be Free”

Got to be free to do what I want
Walk if I want, talk if I want
Got to be free to say what I want
Make what I want and play what I want
As free as the birds up in the sky
As free as the bugs and the spiders and flies
I don’t know how but I’m gonna try
I’ve just got to be free
And it won’t be long ‘cos we’re right
And they are wrong

Tomorrow: MORE CLASSIC ROCK “Green River” by Creedence Clearwater Revival  Well, take me back down where cool water flows, yeah!

Day 121. “Outlandos d’Amour” by The Police

Rockin’ my sweet purple sweatsuit (thanks mom…), and checking out the sky with Dad while Lydia naps ❤

Father’s Day was yesterday ❤ Wondering what it would be like if he was still around.

To Pop-Pop Bob, Pop-Pop Walter & My Dad.

I love you, and miss you very much.

Hope you enjoy this album as much as I have.

Tomorrow: “Lola Versus Powerman And The Moneygoround, Part One” by The Kinks

Day 116 through Day 120 presents MXPX week!!

hah 🙂 PXPX Represent 🙂

Day 116: “Secret Weapon” by MxPx

I took a week’s break from writing, but not from the music. My best friend of…well, since we were 3-4 years old, came to visit me in San Diego for the first time. We went everywhere…including The Troubadour in Hollywood for MxPx on my 29th birthday.

Secret Weapon came out in 2007. Almost 10 years already, wow.  I really love this album. It represents those key topics that Mike Hererra always emphasizes in his lyrics. Be true to yourself, because you are your own secret weapon.

Track 7- “Angels” was always my favorite

In a room without a window, your head starts caving in
Your mind takes you to places, that it’s never been
In a house without a hallway, there’s nothing more to see
Four walls full of pickup sticks and atrophy
Where the sun shines bright and I don’t have to lock my door
Where the moon is full and I’m not tired, anymore

Where angels carry me along the way
Where I can close my eyes at night and pray
Where angels sit and watch me while I look up to the sky
Where angels carry me along the way

A lot of interesting things happened the year that this album came out. I was talking to Nick  everyday while I was living in Pittsburgh. I was planning my escape to see him in San Diego, CA. I was turning 20, and falling head over heels for (get ready for a cards against humanity card) “some douche with an acoustic guitar”.

Day 117: “Life in General” by MxPx

This album, just the way it starts reminds me of laying in my room, listening to the rain tapping the tin roof of my balcony, and thinking about boys.

Track 1- “Middlename”

Emotion, is my middle name
I lay in bed and listen to the rain
Put happy thoughts in to my head
But I find instead the hurting words you said

Why won’t you believe me
When I tell you the things that I see?
And I’ll still see you tomorrow, at the show

It’s been a long winded, long time
I wish I’d never met you
I wish I could forget you
And what you said
You’re directing your complaints to me
I should walk away, I could easily
Never hear a word you say

I’m not your robot or your slave
I won’t behave, I’m not your toy
Go on go bury me with self righteousness
I confess, I’m just a boy

Day 118: “Before Everything & After” by MxPx

I remember being so excited to pick up this album at Music Den @ Rockvale outlets. I also remember I was working at Darrenkamp’s in Willow Street. One day I got to work produce in the back, and they started playing

Track 7-“Everything Sucks”

All I ever needed was to eat popcorn with you,
Come on over,
Watch the late show,
Stay up talking until two

Today’s the day you’re leaving,
And tomorrow you’ll be gone
You’re in my heart and on my mind,
I will bring you along

Everything sucks when you’re gone,
Everything sucks when you’re gone

I was pretty excited to here MxPx on the radio because it was a rarity. They somehow managed to sneak them in between R. Kelly’s remix to Ignition, and Nelly’s Air Force Ones. Go Radio!

Day 119: “Teenage Politics” by MxPx

I’ve probably listened to this album less than any other MxPx album, which is a shame…because it is AWESOME. I did have a select few favorite tracks that I would play over and over again, but I’m not sure that I ever really listened the entire way through. This was a treat 🙂

Mike’s lyrics are so personal, and interesting. He relates to all of us during our teenage years. It was when we really started questioning life and the decisions we would be making along the way.

Track 11- “Democracy”

believing the lies defines american
they don’t realize their ignorance and sin
democracy ain’t real it’s a fairy tale
anarchy now then spend the night in jail
i won’t pretend that it ain’t wrong
i won’t just go along
humanity is diseased
and the sickness has increased
for the people by the people
who’s considered people anyway?
the rich get richer and the poor get poorer
so much for equal opportunity!

Day 120: “Pokinatcha” by MxPx

Yes. Yes. and…YES! This is where it all begins, and where it ends this week!

.Weekend Feels.

Day 114: “Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo” by MxPx

Yours truly on her 28th birthday presenting Everything is Illuminated at Cal-a-vie Spa in Vista, CA 🙂 2015

“Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo” by MxPx

Some fans would say this is the very best MxPx album-ever. It is definitely one of my favorites. Listening to it, and looking back on my life thus far is pretty incredible. Tomorrow, I will be 29 years of age. I was listening to this album probably about 15 years ago, when I was 13 years old. I made a home-made iron-on-letter t-shirt (so many hyphens!) for the song “Set the Record Straight”. I went to my first MxPx show with my cousin, Christy. And, if I remember correctly…it was also my birthday!

To say that this music was influential in my upbringing would be an understatement. MxPx always served up a positive message, and became important role models.

Track 2- “Tomorrow’s Another Day”

I don’t want to let my life fly by
Do you ever stop, stop to wonder why?

And time flies by
When everything is ok
It just turns out that life ain’t that way
Big decisions overwhelm me and I know
nothing’s free

When I don’t think of, think about much
People die and we don’t know why
I could use some understanding
Human contact, sign that contract

I don’t want to let my life fly by
Did you ever stop to wonder why-ever stop to
wonder, wonder why?

And time stands still when no one understands you
When you don’t quite understand yourself
But just know this that God is faithful
Even if you don’t have faith yourself

There’s nothing quite like being sure of
What’s inside your heart
It’s mostly simple but not so easy
To know just where to start

Today didn’t have to be this way
Tomorrow is another day
Another chance to make things right
A chance to make sense of last night

A chance to fully live your life
I don’t want to, I don’t want to, you don’t want to

❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ I’m going to see MxPx tomorrow. at the troubadour. in hollywood. with two of my best friends. on my 29th birthday. ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

Tomorrow: “The Ever Passing Moment” by MxPx
