Day 190. “Random Access Memories” by Daft Punk

I love this album.

My favorite is Daft Punk’s collaboration with Giorgio Moroder —Moroder had recorded a monologue about his life for use in a track on the album. Moroder clarified that he was not involved in the composition of the track or its use of a synthesizer: “They did not let me get involved at all. Thomas asked me if I wanted to tell the story of my life. Then they would know what to do with it.”

Track 3-“Giorgio By Moroder”

When I was fifteen, sixteen, when I started really to play the guitar.
I definitely wanted to become a musician.
It was almost impossible because it was, the dream was so big that
I didn’t see any chance because I was living in a little town.

I was studying and when I finally broke away from school and became musician.
I thought “Well, I may have a bit of a chance.”
Because all I ever wanted to do is music but not only play music but compose music.

At that time, in Germany, in 1969-70, they had already discotheques
So I would take my car and go to a discotheque, sing maybe thirty minutes
I think I had about 7-8 songs.
I would partially sleep in the car because I didn’t want to drive home and that helped me for about almost two years to survive.
In the beginning, I wanted to do an album with the sounds of the 50s, the sounds of the 60s, of the 70s, and then have a sound of the future.

And I said, “Wait a second, I know the synthesizer. Why don’t I use the synthesizer, which is the sound of the future?”
And I didn’t have any idea what to do but I knew I needed a click so we put a click on the 24 track which then was synced to the moog modular.
I knew that it could be a sound of the future but I didn’t realize how much impact it would be.

My name is Giovanni Giorgio, but everybody calls me Giorgio

Once you want to free your mind about a concept of harmony and music being correct, you can do whatever you want.
So nobody told me what to do and there was no preconception of what to do.

Track 3- “Never There”

I need your arms around me,
I need to feel your touch,
I need your understanding, I need your love,
So much,

You tell me that you love me so,
You tell me that you care,
But when I need you, (BABY)
Baby, (You’re never there),

On the phone,
Long long distance,
Always through such,
Strong resistance,

When first you say,
You’re too busy,
I wonder if you,
Even miss me,

Never there,
You’re never there,
You’re never, ever,
Ever ever there,

A golden bird that flies away,
A candle’s fickle flame,
To think I held you yesterday,
Your love was just a game,

A golden bird that flies away,
A candle’s fickle flame,
To think I held you yesterday,
Your love was just a game,

You tell me that you love me so,
You tell me that you care,
But when I need you, (BABY)
Baby,

Take the time,
To get to know me,
If you want me,
Why can’t you just show me,

We’re always on,
This roller coaster,
If you want me,
Why can’t you get closer,

Never there,
You’re never there,
You’re never, ever,
Ever ever there,

Never there,
You’re never there,
You’re never, ever,
Ever ever there

Day 187. “Bleed American” by Jimmy Eat World

Back to high school marching band…

I absolutely loved this album, and the guy on the right made fun of me for it. Thanks a lot, Kaufman!

Allie and I would be all set and ready to go on the field for practice, and this guy would come up to us, yawning…and then would proceed to mockingly (is that a word?) sing, “It just takes some time….”

haha! Fun times at band camp.

I also had a sweet baby blue t-shirt I bought at Hot Topic that had angel wings on the back and said “May Angels Lead You In”. I wore it pretty much every day.

Track 6-“Hear you Me”

There’s no one in town I know
You gave us some place to go.
I never said thank you for that.
I thought I might get one more chance.
What would you think of me now,
so lucky, so strong, so proud?
I never said thank you for that,
now I’ll never have a chance.
May angels lead you in.
Hear you me my friends.
On sleepless roads the sleepless go.
May angels lead you in.
So what would you think of me now,
so lucky, so strong, so proud?
I never said thank you for that,
now I’ll never have a chance.
May angels lead you in.
Hear you me my friends.
On sleepless roads the sleepless go.
May angels lead you in.
May angels lead you in.
May angels lead you in.
And if you were with me tonight,
I’d sing to you just one more time.
A song for a heart so big,
god wouldn’t let it live.
May angels lead you in.
Hear you me my friends.
On sleepless roads the sleepless go.
May angels lead you in.
May angels lead you in.
Hear you me my friends.
On sleepless roads the sleepless go.
May angels lead you in.
May angels lead you in.

They wrote this song for two women that ran the Weezer fan club, and had died in a car crash in the  late 90’s. They used to provide a place for the bands to stay while they were on the road, and were well respected in the music industry for their selfless acts of kindness.

Day 186. “The Dresden Dolls” by The Dresden Dolls

The first time I heard this album was in the basement of my friend Mark’s house. It didn’t hold much significance over me at the time. I also hadn’t really experienced any heartbreak, and found my late teenage self to be quite invincible.

During my first heartbreak, I revisited the album….and wallah (I get it now). Although, Amanda Palmer doesn’t just emulate that sad, emotional girl who’s been hit by a proverbial bus…she pokes fun at herself, and shows us….hey! It’s normal!

Track 9- “The Jeep Song”

I’ve been driving around town
With my head spinning around
Everywhere i look i see
Your ’96 jeep cherokee

You’re a bully and a clown
You made me cry and put me down
After all that ive been through
You’d think i’d hate the sight of you

But with every jeep i see
My broken heart still skips a beat
I guess its just my stupid luck
That all of boston drives that same black fucking truck

It could be him or am i tripping
And i’m crashing into everything
And thinking about skipping town a while
Until these cars go out of style…

I try to see it in reverse
It makes the situation hundreds of times worse
When i wonder if it makes you want to cry
Every time you see a light blue volvo driving by

So dont tell me that you’re off to see the world
I know you wont get very far
Dont call me if you get another girl baby
Just call me if you get another car

The number of them is insane
Every exit’s an exboyfriend memory lane
Every major street’s a minor heart attack
I see a red jeep and i want to paint it black

It could be him or am i tripping
And i’m crashing into everything
I can’t wait til you trade that fucker in
By then they will have stuck me in the looney bin

It could be him my heart is pounding
Its just no use i’m surrounded
But someday i’ll steal your car and switch the gears
And drive that cherokee straight off this trail of tears

Day 184: “Gazing at the Moonlight” by Hopsin

Today, September 15th, is my brother’s birthday. Isaac was the only person in my family that really got into hip-hop/rap. It started with the Eminem craze. He was a real slim shady.

I asked Isaac what his favorite Hopsin album was. Hopsin was a newer underground rapper that he had introduced to me a few years ago. He has a lot of respect for him, so I figured I should check it out. (I also shared with him “The Good Fight” by Oddisee”).

All I can say is, I don’t think this album was meant for women. It definitely wasn’t made for me… It falls along a lot of the same lines as Eminem’s lyrics. Crude & Angry. Again, not my cup-o-tea.

So, thanks Isaac…but no thanks! haha 🙂 Still love you! ❤

Day 181. “The Good Fight” by Oddisee

“The Good Fight” is by far, my favorite of all albums I have listened to this year.

Let me start by telling you a little bit more about this artist. Oddisee (Amir Mohamed el Khalifa) is a rapper from Washington D.C. He doesn’t rap about drugs, or hoes, or murder…he raps about social awareness, love, and psychology.

I dig it.

One of my favorites,

Track 6- “Belong to the World”

Walk around the city by my lonesome
All that what I see is where the flow from
There’s a million faces in the place to be
Get it where they fit in trying slip in which space is me
Within the sea, am I unique or just another fish
To grow feet and walk a beach how most done
Evolvin’ at a speed is hard to see I’m in the chill lane
I be in the lobby in a party where I feel strange
Never was the cool dude, never was a suave guy
More like the odd guy, want a woman to root to
Never wanted to be the type that they were used to
Now I’m flying somewhere overlooking a dream
And being overlooked did wonders for my esteem
Now I get a lot of likes like I’m the one that they grew to
Something I couldn’t see when I belonged to the scheme
Separated from the cliques and I created a team
It was me, Amir Mohamed , Oddisee is the squad
Much appreciation to ’em both of them gave me a job
Tried to tell ’em I ain’t part of the commerce of art
They was “Like yeah you are, you smart”

[Chorus]
I’m just trying to break out the mould
Trying to do the opposite of everything that I’m told
Try to put me in a box, already in a globe
So I don’t get offended by the thinking of the old
Where I’m at is where I go, and a circle ain’t my thang
So it seems there were two gangs
Not enough, but too much changed
Two extremes and we are caught in the middle
Forever lost in the process to choose ‘tween
Somebody ask what do you claim
I belong to the world

[Verse 2]
Save a seat for the quiet one
I’m working hard to make my ones able
There ain’t a place that I don’t call home
Was dropping beats at the lunch table
Now you can buy one, gotta keep my funds stable
The Western world to me is all wrong
And Babylon becoming unstable, don’t wanna die young
I’m making moves like the ice caps staying hot with a tight track
Never spoiled I don’t want labels
If you can find one, take it that they all wrong
I’m feeling to unchain you
And liberate you from the Wall Streets you occupy
There’s a lot of sky and underneath it a lot of pie
And you don’t need a bigger plate, just a smaller stomach
You fed up on the feeling once, and you convinced you want it
Well go and get it, be another statistic
Bit off more than you can chew and so you started to vomit
I don’t go that route, I don’t hang with them
I just go around the globe and not a turn for the stunting
And keep it all in house, the world is my backyard
Don’t try and break my fence, nah

[Verse 3]
Whats a clique, whats a crew, what’s a gang to a brother who been doing this thing all along
I belong to my name, that’s the only set I claim
I ain’t bothered by the politics of fame
I perform, they put on, that’s the norm, trying to get me on a song like baller this, shooter that
Then they got wrong mic
This the wrong platform, they about the wrong life
This is for the people I’m just trying to cut a path forward
Trying make some music for the future that will last long
Though the never ask for it
I’ma give it to ’em, I’ma give it to ’em
Pioneering tunes and forever I’ma live through ’em
Word to Bob Marley he put memories in melodies
It’s relevant in the present though he made it in the 70’s
That right there was telling me the classic where it better be
And if it ain’t then it don’t deserve to represent the pedigree
Part of the solution, or part of the problem
All the moving parts in the process revolving
What are you involved in, answered my calling
I belong to the world

Thank you, Oddisee.
